ADULT Stem Cells, Dammit! ADULT stem cells.
I don't know whether he meant to obfuscate the issue or not, but I always find myself annoyed when I read about some advance in medicine made possible by stem cells, and no real effort goes into differentiating between embyronic stem cell research--the old Democrat multi-billion dollar boondoggle, and research based on adult stem cells.
While everyone else may have forgotten about this issue, I've continued to follow it, and embryonic stem cell research is just as much of a dog as it was four years ago, while researchers are doing amazing things with adult stem cells.
What set me off today? This littlest thing--Glenn Reynolds short little link to 'pioneering stem cell research'. I'm sure he meant nothing by it, but as the article makes very clear, this wasn't pioneering embryonic stem cell research paid for by long-suffering Missouri and California tax-payers.
In an operation Monday lasting nearly nine hours, doctors at London's Great Ormond Street children's hospital implanted the boy with a donor trachea, or windpipe, that had been stripped of its cells and injected with his own.Over the next month, doctors expect the boy's bone marrow stem cells to begin transforming themselves within his body into tracheal cells -- a process that, if successful, could lead to a revolution in regenerative medicine.
The new organ should not be rejected by the boy's immune system, a risk in traditional transplants, because the cells are derived from his own tissue.
Perhaps we can use this research to help Democrats grow some new brains, hearts and even consciences...
