You only get millions of dollars and an attaboy if you blow the whistle of politically-correct fraud and corruption. If you blow the whistle on say, California's Air Resources Board, you get fired.
UCLA has tried to characterize James Enstrom as a lone-wolf, anti-environment crusader for publishing and then publicizing his research that differentiated the health effects from California diesel particulate produced by its power plants, from the coal, soot and metal particulate produced from east coast power plants. He then had the temerity to reveal that a prominent CARB staff member, most directly responsible for the diesel particulate recommendations to the state government, had in fact faked his UC Davis academic credentials, receiving his doctorate from a diploma mill. That led to the revelation and subsequent law suit over the terms of serve of CARB regulators, which are by law set to three years. The average CARB regulator has served 10 years in what has effectively become a 'regulator for life' position. Another one of Enstrom's prominent opponents had his 26 year run as a CARB regulator ended by that controversy.
Prof. John Froines wasn't happy about having to leave CARB, and apparently used his weight at UCLA to engage in a vendetta against Enstrom.
Enstrom's nonreappointment is under appeal.
