Bizarro George H.W. Bush

Crooks and Liars responds to the Obama administration telegraphing that they will likely cooperate with Republicans in extending all the Bush-era tax cuts.

That does it. Obama needs to face a strong primary challenger. And no, I don't care if it costs the Democrats the White House in 2012. Obama had a golden opportunity to have an actual victory -- the first he's had since he killed that fly back in 2009 -- and he's flushing it down the crapper. We cannot have this guy representing us anymore. He is too weak to lead.

I don't know if its actually true, but there is a consensus that George H.W. Bush was a one-term President because he vowed not to raise taxes (read my lips) and then went back on his word. President Obama vowed that he would raise taxes (on the 'rich'), and now appears to be prepared to accept an across the board renewal of the Bush tax cuts. Like Bush, Obama appears to be on the verge of losing his base, not because he ignored the fierce moral urgency of closing Guantanamo and not because he continues to prosecute the war in Afghanistan, but because if you don't confiscate people's earnings, what the hell kind of a socialist are you?

I guess now we know how to really define 'fierce moral urgency'.

Addendum: Hammering home the point, Sen Menendez (D-NJ) had this to say about Republican rejection of the Democrat tax plan:

Asked if Democrats have a responsibility to move forward with a bill that can become law – in other words, a bill Republicans will support and not block-- here’s what Menendez said:

“Do you allow yourself to be held hostage and get something done for the sake of getting something done, when in fact it might be perverse in its ultimate results? It’s almost like the question of do you negotiate with terrorists.”

We appear to have stripped away all the irrelevancies to get down to what makes a Democrat.
