If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine...--Ann Coulter
The gender gap was something that first appeared in the eighties, with single women in particular voting Democrat in droves. After it was determined that Al Gore won 54% of the women's vote in 2000, many pundits thought Hillary Clinton would be an unstoppable force in 2008. Apparently American women thought the end of racial politics was a bigger deal than having a woman as President.
Now it turns out, that Republicans have wiped out the traditional advantages Democrats held with women, Roman Catholics, the poor and independents. People with PhDs still prefer Democrats (insert joke about being credentialed rather than educated here...).
If women choose Republicans over Democrats in House races on Tuesday, it will be the first time they have done so since exit polls began tracking the breakdown in 1982.
Impressive, but the women's vote, should it materialize as expected, is especially significant because of the reasons women have voted Democrat--security.
You might think that a party that just rammed through Obamacare, might be doing better with a gender that is perennially worried about health care for themselves and their children, but while you might need healthcare at certain points in your life, you need an income every day.
The poll provides a pre-Election Day glimpse of a nation so politically disquieted and disappointed in its current trajectory that 57 percent of the registered voters surveyed said they were more willing to take a chance this year on a candidate with little previous political experience. More than a quarter of them said they were even willing to back a candidate who holds some views that “seem extreme.”On the issue most driving the campaign, the economy, Republicans have erased the traditional advantage held by Democrats as the party seen as better able to create jobs; the parties are now even on that measure. By a wide margin, Republicans continue to be seen as the party better able to reduce the federal budget deficit.
Not that this is all that surprising, but it is instructive. Apparently Democrats scare the country when they act like Democrats (...and which explains why so many of them run as Republicans...). The converse is more important though--Republicans do well when they act and govern like Republicans.
Over to you Congressman Boehner.
