There is more than a passing similarity between Obamacare and slasher flicks. Just when you think the monster is dead for sure, it dispatches another cheerleader.
Its fitting that the funereal Harry Reid announce the return of Obamastein.
A lot of people, including a lot of Democrat strategists, are wondering what the hell is going on here.
I suspect I know, and if I'm right, it suggests that a party that seems to have been immune to political reality has finally, albeit reluctantly accepted the inevitability and magnitude of their upcoming loss.
The analysis of the Scott Brown victory is in, and Democrats learned two important things--they have alienated a lot of bitter-clingers and that means they are going to lose Congress in the fall. The other is that they might still have held on in Massachusetts if the base hadn't been demoralized to the point that they just stayed home rather than vote.
Time to circle the wagons and wait out the Indians.
Democrats are going to take a huge hit for trying to ram through health-care legislation, with the public option reintroduced, but probably no more of a hit than is presently in the cards. On the other hand, the far-left base of the party is going to be ecstatic, which is a marked improvement from the current sour mood. With the party in good odor with the communist wing, enthusiasm might just be enough to protect the core districts and prevent anymore Scott Brown events deep in Blue territory.
The great thing about the strategy is that even if they lose, which seems very likely, they'll get the same credit for effort as if they had succeeded.
The power of incumbency is such that when a formerly safe seat is lost, it may well be lost for a generation. Republicans lost the Utah 2nd district after two successive representatives became mired in scandal. Jim Matheson, son of the former Democrat governor of the state, won the seat in 2000 and has held it ever since. Matheson is the lone Democrat in the Utah congressional delegation, but I expect he'll hold that seat as long as he wants to.
Democrats may have conceded that the battle is lost, but the war continues and keeping your forces intact is a completely sensible strategy.
For among other evils caused by being disarmed, it renders you contemptible; which is one of those disgraceful things which a prince must guard against --Machiavelli
