Its 3:00 AM--The Phone is Unplugged

The Washington Post prints a bombshell-a confidential report from the top U.S. and NATO commander that without a "surge", Afghanistan is lost.

None of this is particularly surprising to anyone who has been paying attention, but the leaking of a confidential memo from the top U.S. commander, to the media? That's astounding.

The isn't some obscure government department trying to drum up some political leverage to improve their budget situation--the administration policy has at least publicly been supportive and there is nary a sign from the left's screaming meemie contingent that they feel about the Afghanistan war the way they did about Iraq (I'm not holding my breath waiting for a rational explanation of this curious lack of outrage...).

With politics off the table, the real motives for such a leak are hard to spin as particularly nefarious. This is an official report, backed up with an abundance of assessment and its unlikely that anyone is seriously going to challenge its conclusions. Its almost certain the McChrystal is acting like a man who wakes to discover his house burning and is running around furiously waking his children and hustling them out the door.

I'd like to say I'm shocked that the Obama administration could be AWOL on national security issues like this, but Obama administration incompetence, even gross incompetence, is so obvious, so fundamental to this collection of morons, that it merits naught by a shoulder-shrug and possibly a "I told you so."

The only mystery now is how the administration is going to spin this, but frankly, considering Obama's plea of ignorance over government funding of his good buddies over at ACORN, stunned silence and a lot of ums and ahs might be the best bet.

Does Bob Woodward's reporting signal all the other rats to abandon ship? Considering how outrageously blatant the media has been about burying serious scandal, and ignoring 2 million people on the mall, this is a really incredible about face.

I have written that at some point, the liberal-left media would be considering self-preservation and throw the Obama administration under the bus--perhaps that moment has arrived.
