Neosavages

Negotiation and compromise are only possible with civilized people, because on the civilized can understand the concept of sacrificing something now for something better later. It is a triumph of virtue and imagination. Savages are of course, a different story.

"It is difficult to deal with terrorism through non-violence," the Tibetan spiritual leader said delivering the Madhavrao Scindia Memorial Lecture here.

He termed terrorism as the worst kind of violence which is not carried by a few mad people but by those who are very brilliant and educated.

"They (terrorists) are very brilliant and educated...but a strong ill feeling is bred in them. Their minds are closed," the Dalai Lama said.

The Dalai Lama enlightens us to the modern nature of savages. Brutes yes. Unsophisticated? No.

I thought about his comments overnight, as I contemplated the brutish mentality of Bush critics whose monochromatic world simply doesn't allow them to acknowledge anything worthwhile in the man himself or his administration.

Bush has freed 50 million from oppression. No comment.

Bush saved as many as 10 million lives in Africa. Crickets chirping.

Dick Cheney is the most pro-gay VP in history. Ils s'en fouent.

If there ever was an object lesson that no conservative and/or Republican can ever expect a nod or a wave from the liberal-left elite, then this is it.

Even in victory, no magnanimity.

Savages. New Savages. Neosavages.

UPDATE: As if to prove my point....

"Nah nah nah nah, hey hey, good-bye," a section of the crowd chanted.

The crowd packed immediately below the podium received Bush in stony silence when he took his seat on the stage surrounding the podium where Barack Obama was scheduled to take the oath office to become the 44th president of the United States.

The jeers are among the final public feedback Bush will receive as president.

Anne:

This is a great post.

I hope the Dalai Lama comes to the US again soon on another speaking tour. I wonder how he will be received by the left with this post-Mumbai insight. I think you've given us the answer.
