Former community organizer and current mayor of Hartford, Connecticut is submitting himself for arrest today on charges of bribery, fabrication of evidence and conspiracy. Party affiliation isn't explicitly mentioned in the Hartford Courant, but there is a picture with the following caption.
Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez addressed the crowd and led a cheer for Democratic winners at an Election Night victory party at Union Station in Hartford last Nov. 4
Frankly, that's pretty brave of the Courant in this political environment. They might want to keep a watch out for Dodd's goon squad.
Perez apologized to voters for his "lapse of judgment". Jammie Wearing Fool notes that this is becoming a popular excuse for Democrats caught red-handed doing things that would get a Republican the death penalty.
A lapse in judgment?Hmm. That sounds familiar.
Politics, of course, involves compromise—and by sticking with Timothy Geithner as treasury secretary, Obama has signaled his willingness to overlook an earlier lapse in judgment by his nominee in order to get the most competent person for the job.
There must be an "oh crap" hotline for Democrats for public relations advice since they all seem to be using the same "words that work". "Lapse in judgment" sound so much better than "cheating", "stealing" or graft.
We are very quickly building a rogues gallery of Democrat mayors destined for rooms with no view. Perez joins Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon in her inability to resist gifts from political interested parties, although he didn't steal gift cards destined for Baltimore's poor. Oh, rumor has it that she's also a Democrat.
But its not just money, its sex too. Sex with minors.
Two term Racine mayor Gary Becker was arrested on a host of child sex charges.
- Attempted sexual assault of a child under 16 years of age. If convicted, he could face up to $50,000 in fines and up to 20 years imprisonment, which includes time in jail or prison and on extended supervision or probation.- Child enticement. If convicted, he could face up to $100,000 in fines and 25 years imprisonment.
- Possession of child pornography. If convicted he could face up to $100,000 in fines and 25 years imprisonment. There is also a $500 surcharge for each image, and a minimum sentence of three years initial confinement, which a judge can order be served on probation.
- Use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime. If convicted he could face $100,000 in fines and 40 years imprisonment. There is a minimum sentence of five years initial confinement, which a judge could order be served on probation.
- Attempted exposing a child to harmful material. If convicted he could face $10,000 in fines and nine months imprisonment.
- Misconduct in public office. If convicted, he could face up to $10,000 in fines and 3 ½ years imprisonment.
Becker is facing a maximum of 120 years.
Portland's openly gay mayor, Sam Adams,45, took a special interest in a 17 year old intern, but waited until the boy was 18 before having sex with him. Nevertheless he lied about the relationship and asked his lover to lie as well. He must not have gotten the memo though because he characterized his actions as "dishonest" rather than a simple "lapse of judgment".
The interesting thing is that many of these investigations have been going for months and even years. Its reasonable to expect the rogues gallery to get bigger over the next year unless Barack Obama instructs the justice department to lay off corrupt Democrats. It leads me to ask whether there are only two types of Democrats--those who've been caught, and those that haven't.
